What are we doing?

We are in a climate crisis, a decade sooner than climate scientists previously predicted. Our planet is on fire. How many people know? We have extreme heat waves, wildfires, severe drought, flooding… wildlife dying, and ecosystems fading away…how will they sustain themselves? How many people are awake enough to care?

Do we realize what could happen? Some do, and some choose to remain blissfully ignorant. But with the effects of climate change occurring faster than we could have imagined, it won’t be long before we’re all slapped in the face with the reality we have created.

What would you do differently? Today, I took my first flight since the beginning of Covid. I always used to sit in a window seat but never looked out the window. Choosing to watch movies and read books instead.

But today, I couldn’t stop taking pictures. At one point I thought, enough with the pictures already. But then I realized…each landscape, each moment, each glance is different than the last. It’s new and exciting and beautiful.

Why would I ever stop paying attention? Why should I stop taking pictures? Why not appreciate what is right in front of us now? I never used to think I was someone who took things for granted, today I realized I’ve been taking a lot for granted.

Even when I say I won’t, I keep on,

Even when I watched Nightbirde’s performance and thought, each moment is fleeting and needs to be appreciated,

Even as I’ve watched loved ones pass on, and grieved over those everyday moments I’ll never get again…

What will it take for us to wake up and feel truly connected and grateful for EACH moment of our lives?
